Former Rookie of the Year winner and 2x All-Star Devin Williams is across town to the New York Mets on a 3-yr/$51M deal with an AAV of $17M.
The New York Mets wasted no time in starting the rebuild of the gapping hole that is their bullpen, with 7 of there 2025 relievers coming off the books including elite 3x All-Star Edwin Diaz and 2x All-Star Ryan Helsley who they acquired at last years trade deadline (and who at the time of typing this has already packed up his bags and headed to Baltimore). But brining in on one of the best available relievers in Devin Williams (second after Diaz in my opinion) is definitely a great start.
Unfortunately for Williams, he happens to be coming off what was his worse season in the MLB since coming up with the Brewers back in 2019. What made it even worse (or better depending who you cheer fore) was that it happened to under the bright spotlight of the Bronx, with very high expectations of being their big shut down closer from the Yankee faithful that were obviously not met(s). (see what I did there lol)
Williams finished the 2025 season with a -0.3 WAR in which he complied 62 innings pitched in 67 appearances, where he finished with a 4-6 record, recorded 18 saves, had a 4.79 ERA (career high), 1.12 WHIP, and a 90/226 (3.60) K/BB ratio.
Luckily for Williams though the stats reset next season, and so he's got a fresh start with the crosstown rival Mets in 2026. As of right now FanGraphs has him slotted into the CP role and in line to get 32 saves, but as mentioned at the start the Mets have plenty more work to do with this bullpen. They have even came out and said they are still going to make an effort to bring back Edwin Diaz, who has locked down the back end of the of Mets pen since he came over in free agency from Seattle in 2019. If they are able to bring him back then you can obviously expect Williams role and predictions to alter slightly.
All in all, I think this is a great get for the Mets in the sense they would've been looking A.J. Minter or Adbert Alzolay to close ot games had they not done anything. But also good for Williams to get f the Bronx and try a change of scenery for a hopeful bounce back season in 2026.
